Canyon de Chelly Monument Cave Overlook

Piece description from the artist

This landscape photograph I captured from the overlook at Mummy Cave along North Rim Drive in Canyon de Chelly National Monument near Chinle, Arizona, United States. Tucked within the shaded alcoves of the towering sandstone cliffs are the remarkable Ancestral Puebloan dwellings, a complex of more than 70 rooms that formed the largest preserved village in the monument. From this wide vantage point, the structures resemble a miniature city clinging to the canyon wall nearly 300 feet above the valley floor.

Archaeological evidence suggests the site was occupied for close to a thousand years before being abandoned around 1300, likely due to a prolonged drought that affected the region in the 1200s. The traditional Navajo name for the site, Tséyaa Kini, translates to “House Under the Rock,” reflecting its dramatic sheltered setting. In 1880, the discovery of two well-preserved mummies led archaeologists to give the site its present name, Mummy Cave. I also have some closer zoomed-in views which further reveal the intricate masonry and the enduring legacy of the people who once called this cliffside sanctuary home.
