Boardwalk Along Spearfish Creek

Roughlock Falls in Spearfish Canyon in South Lawrence, South Dakota near Lead, offers a beautiful glimpse of the natural wilderness scenery found throughout the Black Hills. Little Spearfish Creek flows over and around rocky ledges, creating multiple cascades surrounded by moss covered stones, trees, and lush forest vegetation. In the shadows of the rocky bluff, the taller main waterfall adds depth to the scene, while a wooden boardwalk along the creek invites visitors to pause and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature.

I captured this using a long exposure to give the flowing water a smooth, silky appearance as it tumbles through the rugged landscape. The sun was coming in and out of clouds and cam out to give a pop of bright sunlight to the landscape. The rich greens, golden foliage, and textured rock formations create a wonderful contrast with the bright white water.

To access this viewpoint, you can take an easy half mile roundtrip walk from the nearby parking area or enjoy a longer two mile roundtrip trail following the creek through this scenic woodland setting.
