Bighorn Lamb Running After Mom Badlands

A precious wildlife moment along the rugged cliffs of Badlands National Park in South Dakota as a young bighorn lamb was running to catch up with its mother. I captured this ewe and her lamb making their way across the steep rock formations at Pinnacles Overlook during blue hour. Watching them navigate the rugged terrain was incredible, especially knowing how loose and slippery the rocks felt beneath my own feet.

The soft light following sunset washed the Badlands landscape in cool blue tones, while subtle hints of pink remained in the clouds above. The sharply eroded formations of mudstone, sandstone, claystone, and colorful layers create the otherworldly scenery that makes this South Dakota landscape so unique.

Seeing the mother and her young lamb effortlessly climb across the steep cliffs was a truly memorable wildlife encounter. Their confidence, agility, and ability to move through terrain that felt challenging to me were a beautiful reminder of how perfectly adapted bighorn sheep are to the rugged landscape of Badlands National Park. I was grateful to witness this special moment and capture it during such beautiful evening light.
