Piece description from the artist
Standing at Big Badlands Overlook in Badlands National Park near Interior, South Dakota, I was struck by the incredible otherworldly landscape. I captured this photograph while taking in the seemingly endless maze of ridges, deep cuts, and rugged formations reaching toward the horizon. There was something almost surreal about seeing so much raw, untouched scenery.
The layers of sedimentary rock immediately catches your attention, displaying shades of tan, gold, cream, and reddish brown across the landscape. The changing colors, intricate textures, and weathered surfaces create a scene that looks completely different depending on the light and where you stand.
From the overlook, the immense formations seemed to roll endlessly into the distance. Sharp ridgelines rise above winding valleys and deeply eroded ravines, creating incredible depth throughout the view. I love how photographs of the Badlands can capture the details in the foreground while still giving you a sense of just how vast this landscape really is.
This was one of those places where I could easily spend a long time simply looking, photographing, and taking in the scenery. The combination of dramatic geology, expansive views, and earthy colors is exactly what makes Badlands National Park such a memorable destination for me as a landscape photographer.
