Piece description from the artist
A majestic view standing below and looking up at the construction progress of Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota as it appeared in May 2026. This monumental mountain carving is being done on Thunderhead Mountain near Custer.
The face of Crazy Horse now displays remarkable detail, while the extended hand has become increasingly defined, revealing more of the artist's vision with each passing year. The intricate contours carved into the granite help visitors appreciate the enormous size of the memorial and the craftsmanship involved in bringing the monument to life.
Work on the sculpture began in 1948 under the direction of sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and continues today as one of the world's largest mountain carving projects. Set among the scenic pine-covered hills of western South Dakota, Crazy Horse Memorial stands as a tribute to the Lakota leader and Native American heritage while remaining one of the most visited attractions.
