Piece description from the artist
I love photographing birds, so I made a special trip to Haines, Alaska to see the largest congregation of eagles in the United States that takes place each November. Drawn by a late run of chum and coho salmon, some 2,000 to 4,000 eagles converge on the Chilkat River Valley every fall. This fascinating natural phenomenon inspires a week-long celebration of America’s national bird. So this was an appropriate time to capture this majestic eagle soaring over the Chilkat Valley, with snow-covered mountains as a backdrop.
After a career as a photographer and visuals editor in newspapers, I decided to focus on documenting the natural world. I hope my images can not only bring others joy but also create a better understanding of the beauty and life around us.
During my career, my photos have been published in regional and national magazines including National Geographic Traveler, U.S. News & World Report, New Mexico Magazine, Popular Science, and Albuquerque Monthly; and in books and calendars by National Geographic Books, Falcon Press, Rio Nuevo Press, Sierra Press, Landmark, Sierra Club and others.
