Autumn Road Into The Ozarks Sunset

I captured this photograph from the middle of Highway 76 as the road reached the edge of a hill and began descending into the colorful autumn landscape of Mark Twain National Forest near Vanzant, Missouri. Standing at that point in the road gave me a wonderful perspective down the slope, where the pavement curves gently through the trees and disappears from view.

The warm glow of the setting sun illuminated the fall foliage in brilliant shades of orange, red, and gold. The atmosphere is hazy giving the scene a mystical calmness. Tall brown grasses along the roadside added texture to the scene, while the fading light created a soft golden atmosphere across the Ozark landscape.

I really loved the way the road became the natural leading line in this photograph. It draws your eye downhill and around the bend, almost making you wonder what lies beyond the curve. Moments like this are why I enjoy exploring the quiet back roads of the Missouri Ozarks, especially when autumn colors and evening light come together so beautifully.
