A Good Place to Land

Piece description from the artist

Kalaloch is so named after the Quinault word k’–E–le–ok—, or “a good place to land.” That name fits. This stretch of coast, which is one of the few with a natural landing, is a place of calm and protection among a harsh, unforgiving landscape.

When I made this photo, due to the softness of the scene caused by this omnipresent mist, I was thinking about how the Impressionist painters would have depicted it. They let light blur edges, preferring to feature mood over detail. Using a long exposure helped to turn the sky and ocean a smooth pastel, but without robbing it of the drama in the scene.

Supporting all that softness is the rich sandstone formation in the foreground which looked nearly architectural. It looked to me like a framework for the landscape to drape over.

About Scott Wurzel

Arlington, VA

Currently located in Washington, DC, Scott is a native Floridian photographer specializing in landscape photography. His work explores the interplay of light and dark — rejecting the notion that photography is just “painting with light.” He seeks what resides in the contrast — the liminal spaces of the world.

Scott has shot in some of the most beautiful locations in the world, including Iceland and locations throughout the Old World. But some of his most inspiring locations are right at home in America's enchanting National Parks.
