Looking from my balcony I could just about catch the edge of the fireworks display produced by Macy’s each Fourth of July. It’s a limited view, obstructed by buildings, but it’s always exciting, with bursts of glorious colors lighting up the sky. Based on smaller sketchbook watercolors 4th of July #2 this is a combination of gouache and pastel.

Perched on this corner balcony high above the New York City streets, I drew , over a period of 4 years, what I saw when I awoke each morning and often also at night. I could look North-looking up Third Avenue, East-toward the East River, and Northwest-towards the Empire State Building. The same three views always looked different, depending on the time of year, the hour, and the weather. These sketchbooks, with work done in watercolor, pen and ink, and pastel, became the basis for the larger Balcony Series studio paintings :
