About the Artist

Richard Hagerty is a self-taught artist who paints from dreams, memories, symbols, and archetypes. He did not begin to paint until he entered Duke University Medical School, where he sought to balance the rigors of intense medical training.

At a young age, Richard was mentored by noted intellectual, feminist, and art historian, Laura Bragg. She introduced him to the powerful, disturbing paintings of Heironymous Bosch that would inform his later work. Today, Richard works in a variety of media, including pen and ink, watercolor and oil and he has been painting for over thirty years.
