About the Artist

I enjoy creating art in a variety of mediums, including pencil and watercolors, but primarily pastels. I received a B.S. degree in Textiles with a minor in Art from Michigan State University. Over the years, I have studied drawing, oil and watercolor painting, calligraphy, stone sculpture, weaving, computer art and computer animation.

I absolutely love pastels – the colors are wonderful, the application is so varied, interesting, and personal! There are no brushes between you and your painting surface. And yes, pastel images are called "paintings". You can make strong bold strokes or wisps of overlaying color. You can blend several colors together on your surface. And pastels are the same pigment as oils and are as long lasting, if properly cared for. They must be framed under glass to protect the finished painting.

My first studies in pastel were with Wanda Gamble in Smithville, Texas who was often accompanied in her instruction by Glenn Whitehead – they are both wonderful and generous teachers. I have attended workshops with pastel artists Cara Reische, Will Klemm, Susan Carlin, Richard McKinley, Bob Rohm, Claudia Seymour, Liz Haywood-Sullivan, and Frederick Somers.

God’s creation inspires me daily. In my view, art should make the artist and the viewer feel good – either by giving them beauty, humor, a moment of peace… I love to feel that I have achieved that whenever possible.

Most recently, one of my pastel skyscapes was a finalist in the Artist Magazine Annual Competition for 2012. I lived in Texas until my recent move to North Carolina in 2012. Artist Associations include: Campagna Society, Pastel Society of North Carolina and the Piedmont Pastel Society. I work out of my studio at Clearwater Artists Studios in Concord, North Carolina.
