About Paul Kirley

Sonoma, CA

Growing up in a family of artists and designers, art was an integral part of Paul's life as a child. His first set of brushes and introduction to painting came in the spring of 1969. His father was working with "Walter Gropius": in Cambridge, MA. His mom belonged to a figure drawing group that met on Wednesdays in his living room on Center Street in Marblehead. Paul's first paintings were black tempera on newsprint. He was 2 years old and wanted to be an artist when he grew up.

Kirley's artistic influences include a connection to landscape, buildings and place through family exposure to architecture and landscape architecture. He discovered both photography and a love of 50’s "abstract expressionist": painting in his teens. Paul lived to shoot photos, draw and paint. Trips to the museum became trips to church for him. He dreamed "Kline": brush strokes, "Stieglitz": compositions, and "Rauschenberg": combines.

Paul is an exhibiting member of the Arts Guild of Sonoma and regularly contributes to the Venice Artwalk.
