Lory Ivey Alexander is a contemporary visual artist, lawyer, and writer living in her native Washington, DC. Best known for her multilayered, vibrantly colored paintings, Ms. Ivey Alexander’s major interests are Black American and American histories, especially the exploring the intersections of Black, Indigenous, and European American stories. Her works bear the evidence of the artist’s hand and the environment in which they were made. Her solo exhibition, Lory Ivey Alexander: Foremothers, honored the connection between the artist's current body of work and her artistic and biological foremothers. This work was exhibited at the George Mason University in 2019.
Ms. Ivey Alexander founded the Abstract Sisterhood, a collective of conceptually-driven Black women artists.
In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic and amidst social unrest and state killings, Ms. Ivey Alexander launched the Black Breathing project to create a space to honor Black life.
