About Dawn Pettit

Newark, OH

Dawn has been fascinated with photography since her parents purchased a little plastic camera for her when she was six years old. Outside of a college-level photojournalism course, her photographic education has come from learning from the thousands of images she's shot over the years. Dawn worked for many years at a small town newspaper in positions ranging from sports reporter to city editor, but was often called upon to take photos. She spent many off the clock hours in the darkroom with some of the best photojournalists talking about their craft. In recent years she worked in corporate communications and community relations. Photography became an outlet for creativity. Dawn began photographing flowers because she found that shooting them at an especially close range gave them a individual beauty that is often overlooked. Her influence for flower photography is Georgia O'Keeffe. Although her flower photographs are rich in color, she loves black and white photos. Some of her photographic influences include her father, Henri Cartier-Breeson, Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams and Weegee.
