Piece description from the artist
On the first day of a recent road trip through the Southwestern United States we drove through Zion National Park with it's sculptural features in Navajo sandstone, eroded ever so gently over an impossible time. We made frequent stops and I must have changed lenses on my camera dozens of times that day to be able to frame all the spectacular views that were flooding my retina.
I felt blessed I could experience these sights and I hope I can transpire a bit of the same awesomeness i felt to the viewer of the artwork.
Also available matted and framed as a ready to hang artwork.
My name is Robin Vandenabeele and I am a independent photographer that specializes in double exposure photography of subjects from all over the world.
A small word on how i make my art.
I walk around looking for interesting graphical shapes with a lot of contrast between light and shadows.
I take a first exposure, rotate the camera 180° and then take a second exposure that is immediately merged with the first exposure, all in camera. The resulting photograph is a re-interpretation of a scene firmly based in reality but rendered oneiric and surreal because of the multiple exposure technique.
The artwork feels at the same time familiar and puzzling, as the brain tries to make sense of what the eye sees.
I used to travel a lot as a stage builder on large international music tours and on my days off I could always be found exploring and recording my newfound surroundings, first with film cameras and later with a full frame digital slr.
Having held this occupation for over 20 years allowed me to grow and refine in my art and also grow a sizable portfolio of original double exposure travel images.
