Piece description from the artist
A vertical black and white scenic view of the Wilkins Mill Covered Bridge in Rockville, Indiana, captures the charm of this historic structure. Built in 1906 by William Hendricks, this single-span Burr Arch Truss bridge stretches 120 feet long, 16 feet wide, and stands 13 feet high. It was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The bridge is named after the historic Wilkins Mill, which once operated nearby along Sugar Mill Creek.
The area’s early development began in 1835 when Solomon Jessup and Zimri Hunt constructed a mill upstream from the bridge’s current location. George Wilkins opened a general store in the area in 1853 and later partnered with Jessup and William Hunt to establish a carding mill. In 1855, Wilkins purchased and replaced the original mill, giving rise to the name “Wilkins Mill.” Though the mill burned down in 1877, a replacement was built and remained standing until 1947.
