Where Earth Learns to Breathe

Piece description from the artist

I love this photograph because it reminds me that some of the most breathtaking color in the world comes from places we usually overlook. This is a close-up detail of an agate, a rock formed slowly, patiently, over immense stretches of time. The blues feel like quiet water or open sky, while the warm golds and ambers feel like sunlight held inside stone.

When I look at this image, I feel grounded and lifted at the same time. It’s proof that nature doesn’t rush, yet still creates something extraordinary. Having a piece like this on the wall matters to me because it invites people to pause and breathe, to feel steadier, and to remember that beauty often comes from layers of time, pressure, and change.

About Jerred Zegelis

Omaha, NE

Jerred Zegelis was a public high school teacher for almost 20 years before becoming a full-time artist, using a camera as his primary means of expression. Zegelis infuses his love of the natural world into his photography, specifically thinking of the ways local artists interact with the world around them. He does not focus on mountains or oceans, large cities and tropical paradises and instead turns his lens toward the common dirt roads, prairies and open skies of the midwest. He has worked on many large-scale photography projects with another healthcare photographer, and making high-resolution imagery is his primary focus now for large spaces.
