Piece description from the artist
Standing near the edge of a vast desert valley in Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument near Boulder, Utah, this scene features a piece of weathered driftwood resting close to the cliff’s edge, nestled among a few juniper bushes. In the distance, smooth cream-colored sandstone formations stretch across the landscape, shaped by centuries of erosion. Rolling slickrock slopes spill into the valley below, their layered textures and natural lines guiding the eye through the expansive Southern Utah terrain.
Under a blue sky with soft, drifting clouds, the weathered wood in the foreground adds a quiet focal point, an element of time and endurance echoing the ancient geology beyond. Together, the driftwood, resilient junipers, and sweeping valley capture the remote, rugged character and timeless beauty of Grand Staircase–Escalante and the American Southwest.
