Piece description from the artist
A detail shot from a temporary mural created at the Catholic University of America using powdered graphite and charcoal over the period of a month. It was inspired by the movement of large flocks of birds. See the entire piece here: http://rachelkerwin.com/artwork/2796109_Wall_Drawing_Video.html
Rachel Kerwin's artwork seeks to complicate the idea that nature is merely a scenic backdrop for our lives. "I look to art to understand the realities around me. I often gravitate toward events or phenomena that reflect chaos, but also can elicit awe. I find that fascinating – when beauty can arise from survival." By exploring this tension, Rachel's depictions of flocks of birds and billowing smoke reflect the duality of chaos and grace she finds inherent in being human.
Rachel graduated with a BFA in painting from Cornell University. She has been painting for the past eight years with shows in New York, Chicago, and the greater DC area.
