Vanishing Rhino

Piece description from the artist

The Nostalgia series revisits cherished childhood memories—before the prevalence of email and cell phones—evoking a longing for a simpler time. These pieces serve a therapeutic purpose, helping to navigate the emotional landscape shaped by climate change and political unrest. Nostalgia can act as a portal to safety and connection, allowing us to harness joyful and clarifying moments from the past. For Generation X, who have navigated significant personal and societal changes, nostalgia strengthens social and cultural bonds and connects to our emotional regulation systems, providing calming relief. I view the nostalgia as a vehicle, akin to the DeLorean in Back to the Future, transporting us to positive memories and helping us reconnect with our authentic selves. This nostalgic connection acts as a powerful healing force, uncovering deep sources of comfort and meaning.

I also draw profound inspiration from the children she teaches. Observing their drawing styles and subjects, I infuse my work with a fresh sense of wonder and authenticity, capturing the unique perspectives of a child’s world. This not only enriches my artistic expression but also bridges generational divides.

Most recently, she has been using discarded paper materials to create 2D mixed media pieces that show the beauty she observes while adventuring out in the natural world. Through her work, she hopes to inspire and remind audiences of what we have as well as what we stand to lose if we do not take action. When not making art, Jessica is often adventuring outdoors or teaching art to children and young adults in Boulder, Colorado.
