Valley of Mist

Piece description from the artist

If any image comes to mind for you when your read “Dolomites” it’s probably of craggy peaks and maybe glass-smooth lakes. These are well represented in the region and in this collection. But the millions of years of geologic processes which shaped those features also created a varied landscape that wouldn’t look out of place in West Virginia.

When I reached this location near Karersee, the late afternoon light warmed this look down the road, drawing my view into the distant valley. The mist betrays the illusion that these are shorter mountains like their Appalachian cousins — displaying smooth tops instead of the classic pitched peaks you are accustomed to in this region. If you follow the road in your minds eye, you notice that larger, more rugged features reside in the distance. The sharp, proud peaks which make Südtirol world-famous.

About Scott Wurzel

Arlington, VA

Currently located in Washington, DC, Scott is a native Floridian photographer specializing in landscape photography. His work explores the interplay of light and dark — rejecting the notion that photography is just “painting with light.” He seeks what resides in the contrast — the liminal spaces of the world.

Scott has shot in some of the most beautiful locations in the world, including Iceland and locations throughout the Old World. But some of his most inspiring locations are right at home in America's enchanting National Parks.
