Through blossoms to the sky

Through Blossoms to the Sky

Piece description from the artist

It takes me a long time to make a painting whole. Each painting goes through a lengthy search process, allowing improvisation to set me free. Once I've found the image, in this case everything coming into blossom, it takes weeks to fine-tune it. Much still gets changed/enhanced in this last process. The painting teaches me by the choices my hands make. I have to step out of the way and trust the presence trying to get born each and every painting.

About Lorna Ritz

Amherst, MA

Lorna Ritz studied under the instruction of painter James Gahagan, (a student of Hans Hofmann), who was a very important teacher for her in the 60’s. She received an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1971, in both painting and sculpture, (welding steel, and casting in bronze and iron). She welded steel for 25 years, but never stopped painting, and only paints now. It is color and paint that structures the space that then finds the volumetric composition of her painting.
