The witch

Piece description from the artist

There is a forest beyond the river’s bend where no birds sing and no mortal dares to tarry after dusk. The villagers call it the Withering Wood, and they speak of the witch who dwells there, an old crone with eyes like burning moss. I had heard their tales all my life: how she lured travelers astray, how she cursed men to crawl as beasts upon the earth they once trod proudly. I fancied myself a person of reason, of knowledge. And so, with pen and lantern in hand, I entered her domain to learn the truth. The forest was no mere gathering of trees. The trunks leaned close, whispering with leaves that trembled not from wind but from awareness. Beneath my boots, the soil pulsed faintly, as though it remembered every footprint that had ever pressed upon it. When she appeared, she did not come from shadow but formed from it. A figure slight and silent, her hair tangled with fern and thorn. Her gaze fell upon me like cold rain. “You tread upon the veins of the world,” she said, and though her voice was no louder than a sigh, it filled the air as thunder fills the sky. I laughed, a hollow sound that betrayed my fear. “I come only to study. To observe.” “Study?” she echoed. “As they studied the oaks before they felled them? As they studied the wolves before they chained them?” Her hand brushed the earth, and a faint light glowed beneath her fingers. “You see knowledge where there is only hunger.” I felt it then, the forest’s grief, a deep and endless ache. Visions burst upon my mind: men with axes, fires consuming groves, rivers running black with soot. The witch’s eyes held mine, and I knew, oh, merciful heavens, I knew, why she hexed them. “You burn the heart and call it progress,” she whispered. “So be it, man of learning. Let your heart beat as theirs does, beneath the leaf and loam.” A chill seized me. My skin thickened, coarse with hair; my hands curled, claw like, into the soil. I tried to cry out, but only a low growl escaped my throat. Now I wander these woods still, a creature not quite man, not quite beast. The villagers, from afar, glimpse my shadow and whisper anew of the witch’s cruelty. But they do not see her tending the saplings where their axes once fell. They do not hear her mournful songs that keep the forest alive. They call her monster. They call her damned. Yet in the peacefulness of moonlit hours, when the trees murmur my name and the earth forgives my trespass, I know the truth, the witch was never the curse. We were.

About Alicia Lopez

About Alicia Lopez:

"Art is more than a mere snapshot of time; it's a window into the fleeting beauty of a specific moment, a chance to capture the perfect harmony that exists within it."

Alicia Lopez, an American painter, has brought this philosophy to life through her bold and evocative works. Having exhibited widely in both solo and group shows across the United States and Mexico, her artistic journey began in childhood. As a young girl, she would set up imaginary exhibitions for her mother, her first and most steadfast supporter.

"Without the beautiful angel God assigned me as a mom, I wouldn’t be who I am. All I am and will ever be is thanks to her. She is the strongest, kindest, and most lovable human being you will ever meet!" Alicia says, her voice brimming with love.

Her mother’s encouragement laid the foundation for Alicia's passionate pursuit of art, and this deep-rooted sense of gratitude continues to fuel her work. Each of Alicia’s paintings is more than just a visual experience it’s a story. A narrative born from her desire to transform the world into a beautiful, peaceful dream. Her art seamlessly blends the realms of imagination and nature, inviting viewers to embrace the boundless beauty of the world around them.

"Without imagination, I wouldn't have created 80% of my artworks."

A true free spirit, Alicia refuses to be confined by any particular style. She considers herself an artist with no boundaries, a creator who works without limitations or rules. Her paintings often evoke the silent yet powerful forces of nature, each brushstroke a testament to her unrestricted creative process. While she works in both oils and acrylics, Alicia particularly favors acrylics for their versatility and fast-drying properties, which allow her to experiment and evolve without delay.

"I love to create freely without limitations or impossibilities. The best thing about art is there's no limitations."

Over the years, Alicia has built a devoted following and earned widespread recognition in the art world, expanding her reach to international audiences. Her solo exhibitions and collaborations have garnered critical acclaim, further solidifying her place in the global art scene.

"Success to me is the ability to create and love what you do. What seals it all together is having others love what you made with so much passion."

Alicia Lopez’s art is a reflection of her unyielding spirit—an invitation to experience the world through the eyes of someone who believes that imagination and nature hold the key to a life of limitless possibilities. For Alicia, every canvas tells a story, a story driven by an insatiable desire to make the world a more beautiful, peaceful place. Her paintings are more than works of art; they are an embrace of nature’s most stunning contradictions: the gentle and the fierce, the quiet and the loud, the seen and the unseen. Through her eyes, the world unfolds as a living, breathing dream, and she shares that dream with anyone willing to listen.
