The Parade

Piece description from the artist

A boy and his toys. A walk in the woods. The path less taken. All of those come together in this magical, imaginative painting featuring a young boy, pulling his wagon with his teddy bear in it, followed by all of his favorite toys as they form a parade into the forest. This is one of the more detailed paintings I've done and the original thought for this one goes back to a Magritte painting called, "Illustrated youth" in which a row of objects appear on a path. I always liked that painting and decided to give it my own spin, so I decided to create a painting of a boy on a path into a wooded forest, leading a parade of his favorite toys – which are a blend of toys from my youth along with Buzz and Woody who were two favorites of my boys when they were growing up. Having another path that they could have taken adds more story appeal and a bit of mystery to the visual. There's a lot going on in this painting and it takes a while to take it all in – even the teddy bear in the wagon isn't necessarily immediately obvious. It was both a joy and a challenge to create – hope you like it – and I think this one would go great in the bedroom of a young boy with a great imagination – much like me growing up!

About Tom Blood

St. Louis, MO

Tom Blood is a self-taught, modern-day surrealist, heavily influenced by his all-time favourite artist, Rene Magritte. Some of his early works include two crowd favorites – "Bobby Hull" which was created using a palette knife and "The Three Stooges" which was created using three primary colors. Since that time, Tom has pursued a more surrealistic path. He paints ideas. His goal is to paint the impossible, or at least, the highly improbable. With his paintings, viewers can always tell what's going on, not necessarily knowing why. He wants his paintings to tell stories that make people think, or bring a smile. His work has won numerous awards locally and he has had a number of solo shows in the St. Louis, Missouri area where he was born and raised.
