The Lion In Winter

Piece description from the artist

I know lions rarely appear in snow. I also know the forest is not a natural setting for a lion. All reasons why I painted "The Lion in Winter". I was looking to do a wintry painting and for some reason, the old movie title, "The Lion in Winter" starring Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn popped into my head. I had never painted a lion before. So why not give it a try – and put him in a snowstorm? So now you see a majestic lion standing amidst falling snow, its golden mane contrasting with the wintry backdrop. The dense forest is blanketed in white, creating a peaceful and serene scene. Is it surreal? To me, it is and it invokes a sense of awe and introspection. This piece radiates a powerful energy, perfect for inspiring courage and calm in your space. The contrast between the lion’s warmth and the cold landscape invites you to embrace bravery through life's challenges.

About Tom Blood

St. Louis, MO

Tom Blood is a self-taught, modern-day surrealist, heavily influenced by his all-time favourite artist, Rene Magritte. Some of his early works include two crowd favorites – "Bobby Hull" which was created using a palette knife and "The Three Stooges" which was created using three primary colors. Since that time, Tom has pursued a more surrealistic path. He paints ideas. His goal is to paint the impossible, or at least, the highly improbable. With his paintings, viewers can always tell what's going on, not necessarily knowing why. He wants his paintings to tell stories that make people think, or bring a smile. His work has won numerous awards locally and he has had a number of solo shows in the St. Louis, Missouri area where he was born and raised.
