The Elvis Of Badlands National Park Grayscale

Check out the Elvis-style mane hairdo on this large, majestic bison at Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Can you say, "Thank you very much!" It cracks me up, and I can't help but laugh every time I look at this wildlife portrait in black and white. With that windswept hairstyle and confident stare, he looks like he's ready to take the stage as the King of Rock and Roll. Captured during the spring season, he still had quite a bit of his winter fur coat that was shedding off.

I was fortunate to get this close-up portrait while exploring Badlands National Park, one of the best places in the United States to see American bison roaming their native prairie habitat. Once numbering in the tens of millions across North America, bison nearly disappeared in the late 1800s due to overhunting. Thanks to ongoing conservation efforts, healthy herds now thrive in protected areas like the Badlands, where visitors can observe these incredible animals in their natural environment.

Male bison, known as bulls, can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand around 6 feet tall at the shoulder. Despite their massive size, they are surprisingly agile and can run up to 35 miles per hour. Watching one this close is an unforgettable experience, and this fellow's unforgettable "Elvis" hairstyle made the encounter even more memorable.
