Piece description from the artist
A vertical view of Tahquamenon Lower Falls captures the power and beauty of this iconic natural feature on a cloudy, rainy day in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. A local mentioned that the region had experienced several weeks of heavy rainfall, which caused the Tahquamenon River to flow more forcefully than usual. Located in Tahquamenon Falls State Park near Lake Superior, between Newberry and Paradise, Michigan, the river is famous for its rich brown color, caused by tannins leached from surrounding cedar swamps. The Tahquamenon Falls consist of two main sections, the massive Upper Falls and the Lower Falls, which are located about four miles downstream. The Lower Falls feature five smaller cascades flowing around a central island that visitors can explore by rowboat. Open year-round, the park is a top destination in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for hiking, sightseeing, and enjoying nature in all seasons. The area holds cultural and literary significance as well, referenced in Longfellow’s The Song of Hiawatha as “by the rushing Tahquamenaw,” where Hiawatha built his canoe, and also featured in Sufjan Stevens’s song “Tahquamenon Falls” on his Michigan album.
