Surge 4

Surge 4

Piece description from the artist

As the planet gets warmer, our seas are rising. Ocean levels have risen about 8 inches since 1900 and in the future will rise even more quickly due to the current accelerated rate at which sea ice is melting. My Surge paintings are my interpretation of new flooding that is taking place in many affected areas.

About Joanie Gagnon San Chirico

Toms River, NJ

Joanie Gagnon San Chirico’s work focuses on environmental issues regardless of the series or substrate. She portrays imagery of the planet's fragile beauty while questioning our culture which promotes instant gratification while ignoring evolving consequences. She feels obligated to make art that addresses these issues.

Her acrylic paintings combine media to attain intricate textures using an accumulation of thin layers of color and often draws delicate line work with thread. In addition to canvas, she offers artwork on industrial textile or Ecoresin panels. Recently, she completed a healthcare project consisting of paintings layered with satellite imagery of the area surrounding the installation. The work is interactive; visitors and patients can examine the panels and find where they work or live knowing they are never far from home.

Her strengths include the ability to work with members of a team considering their thoughts and direction. This collaboration makes her art stronger. She has worked with clients who have commissioned artwork for libraries, corporate offices, hospital and hotel lobbies, restaurants and private residences. In addition, she exhibits her work and has had 18 solo shows and has been part of many group shows.

She grew up in Massachusetts and now lives with her family in New Jersey, but visits her beloved Cape Cod often.
