Sunshine in a Texas Wildflower Field

Piece description from the artist

A stunning array of light finds its way to this scene in Texas.

Officially designated the state flower of Texas in 1901, the bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis) symbolizes the rugged beauty and enduring spirit of the state. Though several species of Lupinus grow in Texas, the one most often seen—and most vividly captured in this image—is the Texas bluebonnet, known for its intense blue hues and white tips.

Every spring, these wildflowers transform the Texan countryside into a natural spectacle, drawing visitors, photographers, and families who have made “bluebonnet portraits” a cherished tradition. This photograph is not just a moment in time; it’s a celebration of Texas pride, history, and the fleeting but breathtaking glory of spring.

About Jerred Zegelis

Omaha, NE

Jerred Zegelis was a public high school teacher for almost 20 years before becoming a full-time artist, using a camera as his primary means of expression. Zegelis infuses his love of the natural world into his photography, specifically thinking of the ways local artists interact with the world around them. He does not focus on mountains or oceans, large cities and tropical paradises and instead turns his lens toward the common dirt roads, prairies and open skies of the midwest. He has worked on many large-scale photography projects with another healthcare photographer, and making high-resolution imagery is his primary focus now for large spaces.
