Piece description from the artist
In Sunlight at Deep Quarry Lake, I sought to capture the fleeting, ethereal moments when day first touches the landscape and the water. The upper register, alive with vibrant yellows and muted golds, represents the initial burst of sunlight fracturing through the morning haze, reflecting off unseen surfaces and piercing the quiet. Below, the cool, expansive grays and blues evoke the deep, still waters of Deep Quarry Lake, its surface rippled by the faint movement of the waking world.
Gestural strokes and thick impasto mirror the choppy reflections and shifting light on the water, while subtle hints of red and deeper blues punctuate the scene, suggesting life stirring beneath the surface or hidden features. This piece is an homage to those serene, transitional moments when the world is painted anew with light and shadow, inviting contemplation of nature's daily rebirth.
James Tipton’s art speaks to the timeless connection between land, memory, and identity. A native of Illinois, his work is shaped by the vast landscapes of DuPage County’s woods and forest preserves, where he has spent countless hours exploring. At the same time, his Native American heritage and childhood visits to the Cherokee farmlands of his family in Oklahoma imbue his paintings with a deep sense of place and history. These rich, layered memories transcend time, allowing his work to evoke both personal reflection and universal themes of connection to nature and home.
Drawing inspiration from these local landscapes, Tipton’s paintings offer more than a representation of place—they invite the viewer into a living, breathing experience of the natural world in all its ordinary beauty. Whether capturing the quiet solitude of a forest preserve trail or the open expanse of farmland, his work resonates with the enduring allure of spaces that are both familiar and eternal.
In addition to his traditional works, Tipton reinterprets his paintings through digital transformations, creating new permutations of familiar landscapes. These reimagined pieces suggest infinite perspectives on the eternal, capturing the boundless, ever-changing essence of the natural world. Each iteration reveals a different facet of the places that inspire him, offering an ongoing exploration of time, space, and memory. Through this process, Tipton crafts timeless works that not only honor the past but also suggest the endless potential of how the manifold splendor of nature can be expressed both now and in new ways yet to be.
