Sunflower Field

Piece description from the artist

Sunflower Field is an exploration of light, warmth, and the rhythmic movement of nature. In this original oil painting, I sought to capture the deliberate grace of sunflowers as they track the sun across a Southern landscape. It is a study in optimism—a vibrant, textural celebration of a perfect summer afternoon.

Rather than a static botanical study, this work is about the energy of the field. The loose, expressive brushwork conveys the rustle of the breeze through the leaves and the heavy, golden tilt of the blossoms.

The Artistry: Bold Impasto Texture

This work is characterized by my signature impasto technique, where the paint is applied in thick, sculptural layers to give the sunflowers a three-dimensional presence.

The Technique: Using a palette knife, I built up the rich yellows and deep ochres of the petals, allowing them to catch the light and create a sense of movement that shifts as you move through the room.

The Palette: The contrast between the brilliant, sun-drenched yellows and the deep, cool greens creates a sophisticated vibrancy that brings the restorative warmth of the outdoors inside.

About April Moffatt

Summerville, SC

April is heavily influenced by the classical impressionists but strives to bring about elements of expressionism as well into her paintings. She uses color fearlessly and is always striving to "capture the light". April wants her paintings to invoke the feelings of her subjects and especially the wild feelings of being out of doors surrounded by the beauty of nature.
