Piece description from the artist
This photograph offers another perspective of a rare spring storm sweeping across Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park in Arizona, as sleet, hail, and even pockets of snow fall over the desert near the iconic West Mitten Butte. The sudden weather shift softens the landscape, with distant formations such as Big Chief, King on His Throne, Castle, Sentinel Mesa, and Brigham’s Tomb gradually fading into layers of mist and precipitation. Along the valley floor, faint traces of white begin to collect, creating an unexpected contrast against the normally warm red and orange sandstone.
The storm transformed the familiar desert into a cold, moody scene within moments. A delicate haze blankets the buttes and mesas, muting their colors and lending the valley an almost surreal stillness. Storms like this are fleeting in Monument Valley, and witnessing the desert caught between seasons made the experience of photographing this moment both humbling and unforgettable.
