Piece description from the artist
Warm morning sunlight filters into Spearfish Canyon, illuminating Spearfish Falls as its cascading waters tumble through the rocky gorge. I captured this long-exposure photograph after finding just the right angle to reveal a faint rainbow forming in the mist at the base of the waterfall. The combination of golden light, drifting haze, and silky water created an especially beautiful moment.
The falls drop nearly 50 feet as several streams come together and flow over the rugged rocks. Mist rising from the rushing water created a soft haze among the trees on the right, adding an atmospheric quality to the scene. The long exposure smooths the movement of the falls while still showcasing the height and multiple cascades.
Located in South Dakota’s Black Hills, this waterfall is reached by a short hike of roughly three-quarters of a mile round trip. Surrounded by towering canyon walls, trees, and lush vegetation, it is a wonderful destination for photographers and anyone exploring the area.
