SPEAK1

Piece description from the artist

Using a mix of materials and techniques, this work reflects a kind of abstract chaos through which the clarity of the word "speak" cuts. This work was created as cover art for and inspired by an anthology of essays by young authors called "Millennials Speak. Essays on the 21st Century." About Rachel Kerwin

Alexandria, VA

Rachel Kerwin's artwork seeks to complicate the idea that nature is merely a scenic backdrop for our lives. "I look to art to understand the realities around me. I often gravitate toward events or phenomena that reflect chaos, but also can elicit awe. I find that fascinating – when beauty can arise from survival." By exploring this tension, Rachel's depictions of flocks of birds and billowing smoke reflect the duality of chaos and grace she finds inherent in being human.

Rachel graduated with a BFA in painting from Cornell University. She has been painting for the past eight years with shows in New York, Chicago, and the greater DC area.
