Piece description from the artist
This is a part of a series of digital drawings I created using a selection of photographs I took on various flights. I always choose a window seat because I enjoy the daydreamy experience of looking out, and I never know if a particular vantage will be inspirational. Back in the studio, I imported the photograph into Procreate on the iPad, using an Apple Pencil for its pressure sensitivity to draw on it. In Sky City Six, delicate, thin, wobbly lines are inspired by Whistler’s drawings and etchings. Their softness makes them feel as though they belong with the clouds, ephemeral. On my return flights, I anticipate returning home. In this case, it is Miami Beach below. The houses are like mindscapes, projections of what I’m thinking.
Nicole Maynard is an artist working across media: painting, drawing, digital, and games. She received an MFA in Painting with a minor in Printmaking from the University of Pennsylvania and is originally from Boston, Massachusetts. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout the Northeast and Miami. Maynard’s paintings exist at the edge of abstraction and representation, using landscape and imagery such as houses and moving boxes to suggest environments in transition. Her compositions balance structure and spatial illusions, reflecting themes of permanence and impermanence, displacement, and belonging. Architectural ambiguity is conveyed through shifting forms, which play a central role in her process.
