Shelter

Piece description from the artist

I was out for a hike on a cold, overcast Sunday morning when I came across a pair of geese with their 6 goslings in tow. As is typical, my early exposures were pretty generic as I got a feel for their movements and considered what kind of composition I could pull off.

That’s when the rain started. The geese retreated along the river line and I backed off to put a cover over my camera.

But when I returned, the goslings were gone. Nowhere to be seen. How did six tiny geese suddenly disappear?

That’s when I got a closer look- the goslings weren’t gone, they were simply being sheltered from the storm, huddled under their mother’s wing.

I knew they wouldn’t come out until the rain stopped. So I crouched and waited, keeping them in frame. The dad was nearby, staring me down, ready to rough me up if I stepped much closer. Eventually the rain subsided, the curious gaggle poked out their heads, and my shot presented itself.

The spring reveals countless occurrences of nature’s maternal instincts- maybe that’s why this is the time of year we celebrate Mother’s Day.

About Owen Weber

Naperville, IL

In the moments before dawn, just before the sun spills over the horizon and across the landscape, I always smile with anticipation as I wait for the show to begin.

I savor the days when I’m alone in nature, witnessing the world in all its perfection and capturing those fleeting moments of natural beauty.

I love the craft of photography and the entire process of earning a photo that makes me proud- even the disappointing days when my shutter doesn’t click once. The white-out blizzards, stormy nights, and grueling hikes are always worth the dazzling golden sunrises, crimson last gasps of sun at day's end, and the crystal clear night skies staring out into infinity.

It’s all a humble reminder that nature is always in charge, and no two days are the same.

Ultimately, I’m just a guy who loves to see the world, appreciate its beauty and attempts to do it justice with my lens.

I hope you enjoy my work as much as I have enjoyed bringing it to you.
