Secret Shell Cave Page Arizona

This striking orange sandstone cavern, often called Shell Sand Cave, lies tucked behind a Shell gas station near Page, Arizona, which is how it earned its popular nickname. If you’ve seen vibrant cave photos from this region circulating on social media, chances are they were taken right here. This view looks toward the cave entrance, where the person standing at center provides a helpful sense of scale while photographing from the most sought-after vantage point.

Reaching the cave requires hiking through deep, loose sand that can be surprisingly tiring, especially under the desert sun. I captured additional images of this amazing formation, though we weren’t able to step inside for the iconic outward-facing angle. The group ahead remained in the opening for an extended time, limiting access for others waiting. As a photographer, I always try to be respectful, capture my images, then step aside so others can enjoy the experience too. A little courtesy goes a long way in preserving both the moment and the magic of this unique desert location.
