One of the three tunnels along Iron Mountain road, this is a view of Scovel Johnson Tunnel looking east. It is a narrow, single-lane hand carved granite passageway along the scenic 17-mile US-16A highway in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Located in Keystone in Custer State Park, this tunnel was carved in the 1930's to perfectly frame Mount Rushmore which you can see when going the other direction (behind me in this photo). Sun highlighted green trees add a pop of color and light to the aged mountain texture. A partly cloudy sky above adds some contrast. This one is just under 11 inches wide and 11 inches tall making it a one lane tunnel allowing vehicles of limited size. It is pretty cool to drive through.
