Scovel Johnson Tunnel Iron Mountain Road

This wider perspective shows the rugged granite entrance of the historic Scovel Johnson Tunnel, one of three of the most recognizable landmark tunnels along Iron Mountain Road, a scene drive through the Black Hills of South Dakota. Looking west from the roadside, the tunnel creates a natural frame for the distant view of Mount Rushmore. The tunnel marker sign is visible on the right.

Completed during the 1930s, the hand-carved passage was designed as part of a carefully planned scenic route that blends engineering with the beauty of the surrounding terrain. Its narrow dimensions of less than 11 feet wide and 11 feet tall limits the size of the vehicles that can pass through, making every drive through the tunnel a memorable experience.

Soft light filtering through a mostly cloudy sky enhances the textures of the granite cliffs and the rich greens of the forest, creating a timeless view that captures the character of South Dakota's Black Hills.
