Roughlock Falls South Dakota

I captured this vertical photograph showing the flowing rugged beauty of Roughlock Falls, from the upper view point. This is one of the most scenic waterfalls in Spearfish Canyon near Lead, South Dakota. Located within the Black Hills, this multi-tiered waterfall cascades through a lush canyon surrounded by vibrant sunlight woody vegetation, trees, and rich greenery, creating one of the region's most picturesque natural landscapes. This scene shows the upper larger falls.

I used a long exposure to give the flowing water a soft, silky appearance as it flows over the rocky ledge of Little Spearfish Creek. The vivid greens and golden hues of the forest provide a bold contrast to the white water, highlighting the beauty of this hidden Black Hills gem. We had to wait in our car for a storm to pass over us that lasted a good hour with three batchs of hail before I could captured this. I was able to get it just as the sun peaked out giving a beautiful light to the leaves and water.

Roughlock Falls is accessible by two popular hiking routes. Visitors can enjoy a scenic two-mile round-trip hike that follows Little Spearfish Creek through Spearfish Canyon, or choose the shorter route from the nearby parking area, which offers an easy half-mile round-trip walk to the falls. Known for its beautiful waterfalls, limestone cliffs, and abundant wildlife, Spearfish Canyon is one of the premier outdoor destinations and a must visit location for hikers and nature enthusiasts exploring the Black Hills.
