Mainz was founded along the Rhine by the Roman Empire and contains remnants of such architecture along with a flourish of medieval, Renaissance, & Romanesque buildings as varied as its political history, which has also included occupation by Napoleon.
Highlights include the Neoclassical Staatstheater Mainz (Mainz State Theatre), the iconic Romanesque red sandstone Mainz Cathedral, and it is the birthplace of the inventor of the printing press (Gutenberg).
Mainz Cathedral is the centerpiece of the city. At over 1,000 years old, it exhibits multiple styles and periods of design including Gothic, Romanesque, & Baroque, and has been expanded many times over.
Ashland grew up in Southeast Virginia surrounded by lush rural landscapes, great protected swamp lands, national & state parks, the Chesapeake Bay, the Eastern Shore, the breathtaking Skyline Drive & Blue Ridge Mountains, and the inlets & oceans of Virginia & North Carolina.
It was this constant variation in natural beauty that first drew his eye to the camera; that, and the constant joy of capturing life's candid moments on film. Although no particular subject is banned from the lens of Ashland's camera, it is landscapes, cityscapes, wildlife, and nature that truly captures his heart.
