Wiesbaden, literally translated to 'meadow baths', is the capital of the German state of Hesse, and the second-largest Hessian city after Frankfurt am Main. Wiesbaden forms a conurbation with a population of around 500,000 with the neighbouring city of Mainz. The city is located on the Rhine at the foothills of the Taunus, in the Upper Rhine Valley. Wiesbaden lies in the Rheingau wine-growing region, one of Germany's 13 wine regions.
Situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Main rivers, this spa town features Neo-Gothic and neoclassical nods built during the city’s shifting statehood throughout the 19th century. Mainz was founded by the Roman Empire and contains remnants of such architecture along with a flourish of medieval, Renaissance, & Romanesque buildings as varied as its political history, which has also included occupation by Napoleon.
The Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden (Hessian State Theatre Wiesbaden), also known as the Staatstheater Wiesbaden or Theater Wiesbaden, was commissioned by William II as a grand Baroque Revival theatre to celebrate his favorite spa town. The main theatre was opened in 1894, with the foyer being completed in 1902. The elaborate and romantic complex houses performances from all sectors of the performing arts including ballet, opera, symphony, and theatre.
Ashland grew up in Southeast Virginia surrounded by lush rural landscapes, great protected swamp lands, national & state parks, the Chesapeake Bay, the Eastern Shore, the breathtaking Skyline Drive & Blue Ridge Mountains, and the inlets & oceans of Virginia & North Carolina.
It was this constant variation in natural beauty that first drew his eye to the camera; that, and the constant joy of capturing life's candid moments on film. Although no particular subject is banned from the lens of Ashland's camera, it is landscapes, cityscapes, wildlife, and nature that truly captures his heart.
