Reposition

Reposition

Piece description from the artist

Paper is the new surface I have introduced into my painting practice this year, one of the many things my printmaking practice led to. I primarily use airbrush on the paper as there is a softness in how these two materials interact. In this work, there are areas where just fields of color exist and marks are indiscernible, which are contrasted with areas with identifiable marks. Nevertheless, a softness exists to the entire work that creates a recessed space, mainly due to airbrush's interaction with the paper.

About Brianna Howard

Ponte Vedra Beach, FL

Brianna Howard is a recent graduate of Boston University where she studied Painting and Printmaking. She is originally from Jacksonville, FL, but is currently based in Boston, MA.

Airbrushes, brayers, squeegees, brushes, and various tools and textures create and inform subject matter and contribute to the mark-making of the paintings. The deployment of materials in large quantities constructs and informs the work, reflecting the macro and micro operations of the universe. In her work, Brianna creates space through gesture. Through a push and pull relationship, she aims to bring forth, and push back certain marks.

While painting, there is a constant dialogue between her, the tool, and the surface. Because of this, her paintings are living things that constantly change and grow depending on what she feels they need. She creates conditions to react to and problems to solve through the layering of paint, introducing or re-introducing tools, marks, and color. It’s as if she is solving the unresolvable.
