Prospect Park

Piece description from the artist

This is one of my favorite areas in Prospect Park. It is a grove of mostly London Plane trees, although you will find elms and maples strewn about. It is on the edge of the Neathermead, which is known as the center of Prospect Park. I was interested in the way the foreground was covered in shadow, and the background was bright and sunny. I tried to get a sense of depth through the trees, accentuating an inviting yet sheltered feeling.

Contrast was a big thing with this painting. We exist in the space in-between the trees. We need the trees to frame our world, without them we would be lost.

About Noel Hefele

Bronx, NY

I paint New York City's wild edges – the parks, waterways, and forgotten green spaces where nature persists despite urban pressure.

Based in the Bronx, I'm currently exploring Van Cortlandt Park, one of NYC's largest and wildest parks. My work captures these landscapes in oil, focusing on the moments when light, water, and seasons transform familiar places into something unexpected.

I studied at Carnegie Mellon (BFA) and in England (MA in Arts and Ecology). My paintings are in private collections internationally.
