Prairie Dog Chow Time

Piece description from the artist

I captured this close-up photograph of an adorable wild prairie dog enjoying a snack it had found among the grasses at Prairie Dog Town in Devils Tower National Monument, Wyoming. Sitting quietly with its side facing me, the little critter held its food delicately in its tiny paws while nibbling away, its whiskers constantly twitching as it ate.

One of my favorite details in this image is its small rounded ear and bright eye, which really show off the charm and personality of these fascinating animals. Watching prairie dogs is always entertaining. They seem to be constantly busy, eating, playing, digging, or communicating with one another through their unique barks and calls.

I could have spent hours observing them. Prairie dogs are highly social, family-oriented animals that live together in large colonies and are known for their playful behavior and close-knit communities. This photograph captures a quiet moment amid all that activity, showcasing the curious and lovable character that makes prairie dogs one of my favorite wildlife subjects to photograph in the American West.
