An Overwhelming Sense of Dread Was Experienced Outside of Nashville

An Overwhelming Sense of Dread Was Experienced Outside of Nashville

My paintings are where I excise my greatest fears, such as being the victim of random violence, organ failure, financial ruin etc. and where I work through complex problems and things that I don't fully understand. This being the case, I have always found it necessary to approach them with a sense of humor for balance and as a way to take control. For me, humor is found in contrast, between imagery and text and aspects of the figures themselves. The figures, often engaged in passive acts of violence or seen gorging themselves, are indeed grotesque, yet pathetically vulnerable and quite huggable. They are bags of meat about to burst but are propped up on delicate stick limbs which are used to poke, pull, and prod each other. The text and titles of the work are the funniest parts; sometimes possessing an obvious relationship to the image, sometimes they are a bit more ambiguous, they are always meant for your enjoyment.

On a road trip from Texas to Milwaukee with detours through Tennessee, my car developed some serious problems. It eventually made it back to Wisconsin and may or may not be at the bottom of the Milwaukee River.
