Piece description from the artist
Seeing the Northern Lights in Missouri is an extraordinary rarity, and this night over Fellows Lake in Springfield, Missouri felt nothing short of surreal. Distinct streaks of light stretch across the sky, forming visible bands and rays of pink, red, green, and violet that shift and pulse above the water. Their movement is clearly defined, no longer just a glow, but textured ribbons dancing overhead and reflecting softly on the lake below.
On October 10, 2025, the Aurora Borealis erupted during a powerful geomagnetic storm, reaching a KP index of 8.67 and pushing visibility far beyond its usual northern reach, all the way into the southern United States. Choosing to step out on a busy weeknight turned into an unforgettable decision. This was only the second time I’ve witnessed the Northern Lights, but the first time the streaks and structure were plainly visible to the naked eye, not just captured through the camera.
