Piece description from the artist
A alternative rendering of some of the most iconic neon signs that ever graced the famous hotels along the Strip of Las Vegas, Nevada.
My work plays with the stereotypical sights we take for granted and tries to show those in a new and more exiting way, by adding a visual twist to the images that is achieved at the time of exposure.
My name is Robin Vandenabeele and I am a independent photographer that specializes in double exposure photography of subjects from all over the world.
A small word on how i make my art.
I walk around looking for interesting graphical shapes with a lot of contrast between light and shadows.
I take a first exposure, rotate the camera 180° and then take a second exposure that is immediately merged with the first exposure, all in camera. The resulting photograph is a re-interpretation of a scene firmly based in reality but rendered oneiric and surreal because of the multiple exposure technique.
The artwork feels at the same time familiar and puzzling, as the brain tries to make sense of what the eye sees.
I used to travel a lot as a stage builder on large international music tours and on my days off I could always be found exploring and recording my newfound surroundings, first with film cameras and later with a full frame digital slr.
Having held this occupation for over 20 years allowed me to grow and refine in my art and also grow a sizable portfolio of original double exposure travel images.
