Piece description from the artist
I captured this vertical photograph of a beautiful sunburst as rays of sunlight shine along the edge of the iconic rock formation known as Needles Eye in Custer State Park, South Dakota, United States. The upright composition emphasizes the height and grandeur of the towering granite spire while drawing the eye upward toward the glowing sun and partly cloudy sky.
Needles Eye is one of the most recognizable landmarks along Needles Highway, named for its narrow opening that resembles the eye of a sewing needle. The bright sunlight creates a contrast against the rugged gray granite, while clouds drifting across the blue sky add natural artistry and atmosphere to the scene.
Below the formation, the Needles Eye sign can be seen offering a sense of scale and reminding visitors of this famous Black Hills destination. This captures both the dramatic beauty of the landscape and the magical light that makes Needles Eye such a memorable stop.
