Nail clippers are not something most artists use as a subject matter. That's part of what made me want to paint them so much. Mostly I like the way they look, the moving parts, lines from all the grooves and the shadow created. Their complete lack of color gave me the freedom to create a composition in color from my wildest imagination. This painting is meant to be hung where it can be seen and laughed about, a conversation piece.
Sue Graef is an award-winning American artist, born in 1957 from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She currently lives in Clearwater, Florida. Growing up in the suburbs not far from New York enabled her to frequently visit the museums and art galleries, a large influence in her work.
Her works are vibrant acrylic landscape paintings on stretched canvas, lightheartedly expressing her vision of the world.
Graef has exhibited in venues across the United States including Amsterdam Whitney Gallery of New York, Gasparilla Festival of the Arts in Tampa, IDEA Museum of Mesa, AZ , Red Dot Miami, DISTRICT Arts in Maryland and Superfine Miami Beach. The Haegeumgang Museum recently acquired “Look Both Ways” in their permanent collection. Future exhibits include a solo exhibit at ARTIFACT Gallery, New York.
Graef's formal education includes Philadelphia College of Art, Tyler School of Art, Temple University, and Clemson University.
